General
A series of european standards serves the implementation of one of the most important directives for the building industry, the Construction Products Directive.
This directive follows the "New Approach". This means that the directive itself only describes goals - in the case of the Construction Products Directive six essential requirements - which a structure needs to meet.
Which criteria have to be fulfilled to be in compliance with the six essential requirements ist described in detail in harmonized european product standards.
That a construction product meets the six essential requirements and that the verification procedures of all relevant directives have been followed is indicated by the producer by CE-marking.
CE-marking applies to construction products which are regulated by national regulations and laws and refers to "technical specifications", which are "harmonized european standards" or "European Technical Approvals" (with or without guidelines).
The Construction Products Directive allows the perpetuation of existing different safety levels in the member states. It was implemented in Austria by one federal and nine state laws.
