ÖNORM EN 1997-1|General rules

EN 1997-1 is intended to be used as a general basis for the geotechnical aspects of the design of buildings and civil engineering works.

In addition to the basis of geotechnical design, the design of

  • foundations (spread foundations and pile foundations),
  • anchorages and
  • retaining structures are dealt with.

EN 1997-1 also covers

  • fills, dewatering, ground improvement and reinforcement,
  • embankments,
  • overall stability and
  • hydraulic failure

EN 1997-1 is accompanied by Annexes A to J, which provide, e.g. recommended partial safety factor values - the relevant the partial safety factors for Austria will be defined in a National Annex - and supplementary informative guidance such as internationally applied calculation methods.
