EN 1990|Basis of structural design
Scope
EN 1990 establishes principles and requirements for the safety, serviceability and durability of structures, describes the basis for their design and verification and gives guidelines for related aspects of structural reliability. It is based on the concept of limit state design using partial safety factors.
EN 1990 is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 1991 to EN 1999 for the structural design of buildings and civil engineering works, including geotechnical aspects, structural fire design, situations involving earthquakes, execution and temporary structures. For the design of special construction works (e.g. nuclear installations, dams, etc.), other provisions than those in EN 1990 to EN 1999 might be necessary.
EN 1990 is applicable for the design of structures where other materials or other actions outside the scope of EN 1991 to EN 1999 are involved.
It deals with the topic reliability with reference to safety, serviceability and durability as a reference document für other CEN Technical Committees dealing with construction issues.
EN 1990 is applicable for the structural appraisal of existing construction, in developing the design of repairs and alterations or in assessing changes of use.
EN 1990 has to be applied jointly with the National Annex ÖNORM B 1990-1, containing national regulations to Annex A1 (structural engineering). Annex A1 lists recommended partial safety factors for actions in structural engineering. Annex A2 includes partial saftey factors for bridges. The corresponding National Annex is designated ÖNORM B 1990-2. Annexes for other types of structures (e.g. cranes and crane-ways) are planned, but will be incorporated as annexes in other EUROCODE parts. The values for partial safety factors and other reliability parameters count as recommendations for achieving an acceptable reliability level.
